Get Involved project update
Here's some really great news from our student Farzana Shammi:
LINC graduate’s documentary airs on national television
On her first day of Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) class, Farzana Shammi remembers being terrified when her teacher asked her to introduce herself to the other students.
“My LINC teacher really pushed me to overcome my fears,” said the 33-year-old native of Bangladesh who was sponsored by her husband in September 2008. “For me, LINC class wasn’t just about learning how to improve my grammar and writing; it gave me the confidence to pitch my ideas and follow my dream of becoming a filmmaker.”
Funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, the LINC Program is designed to provide English and French language courses to adult newcomers like Farzana.
After graduating from Level 7/8 at Danforth LINC in Toronto, Farzana enrolled in Centennial College’s Broadcasting and Film program.
While at Centennial, Farzana produced a short documentary entitled, “Sneha: Get Involved” with her classmate Adam Rizvi. The documentary highlights the Sneha Foundation, a non-profit organization created to support disadvantaged students in Bangladesh by providing them with shelter and scholarships. At the end of the school term, Farzana and Adam’s documentary was selected to air on TVO’s "Get Involved” television program.
“I couldn’t believe it when I found out that TVO chose my video,” says Farzana, who has volunteered for the Hot Docs International Film Festival and is currently directing a show that features documentaries produced by students that will air on Rogers Television. “When I was moving to Canada, everyone told me it would be next to impossible to break into the film industry and it was so disheartening.”
“But from the beginning, I knew I had to work hard because I was new to Canada,” she said. “Even though English is not my first language, I knew I had to overcome the initial language barrier to pitch movie concepts and interview experts for my documentaries,” she said.
According to Barbara Carter, Farazana’s LINC instructor who supported and encouraged her along the way, Farzana’s success is a result of her willingness to take risks and focus on self-improvement. “She showed up to LINC class every night and was willing to work hard, so I encouraged her to go for it and apply to college.”
Farzana, who has a master’s degree in mass communication and journalism from Dhaka University in Bangladesh, says all newcomers should take advantage of LINC classes funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. “Language classes are the greatest welcome gift from Canada,” she says. “They gave me the confidence I needed so I wouldn’t have to leave my dreams behind in Bangladesh.”

T24 Festival Call for Entries
Dear Centennial College Film and Broadcasting Faculty
The Toronto Youth Shorts Film Festival is a platform for local youth filmmakers in the GTA to showcase their films on the big screen in a professional festival setting. We're the only festival in the city that puts the spotlight on young emerging filmmakers and a highlight on local stories and local productions.
Last year, we launched a new initiative called the T24 Project, a film challenge that tasks young filmmakers to tell their stories about the city on the big screen. Young filmmakers form teams and create a short film that incorporates their experiences in Toronto - the catch is, they must do it all in 24 hours!
This is a great opportunity, particularly for first year students to practice their skills, learn their strengths and weaknesses, produce work for a professional festival, receive feedback via a live adjudication by industry professionals including other festival programmers and film critics and win some great prizes that can be used towards their next project. It's a great learning opportunity and a networking one where they will meet their peers who are also striving to be a part of the industry.
The T24 Project is conveniently held on the evening of April 29th, after exams are over. Deadline for registration is April 27th. All information can be found on our website at www.torontoyouthshorts.ca. We also have a general submission all for work produced by students on their own or for class.
I hope to see Centennial College Students come out and participate in this exciting endeavour. In previous years, we've seen participants come from every major film program in the GTA except Centennial and as a Centennial College alumni (class of 2009, Event Management Postgrad program), it would be nice to see some Centennial representation.
Cheers,
Henry Wong
Festival Director

The T24 Project was one of the best experiences in filmmaking that I have had to date. Bringing together a team and producing a short film over 24 fun and exhilarating hours was the highlight of 2010 and will be again an amazing experience in 2011. I gained an excellent understanding of how I work under pressure, as well as learning a lot about the different skills that my crew had to offer. It was a tiring and difficult endeavour that every filmmaker should try, at least once (if not every year that Henry decides to keep it running!)
- Jamie McMillan, participant of the 2010 T24 Project
Toronto Youth Shorts is a great launching point for any aspiring filmmaker. It gave me my first festival experience and the staff accommodated me with warmth and kindness.
- Philbert Lui, participant of the 2010 T24 Project - winner of the Audience Choice Award
In my opinion the T24 Project film challenge is close to being an essential task for any up and coming film maker. The learning curve is steep and even if the result of your film is less than amazing what you learn about the process and demands of film making is priceless.

B&F Students Land NSI Selection!
Fighting the Demon by Centennial College students Taylor Sullivan and Michelle Tierney has been selected for the NSI Online Short Film Festival.
Fighting the Demon by Taylor Sullivan and Michelle Tierney from Toronto, Ontario has been selected for the NSI Online Short Film Festival. The festival is hosted by the National Screen Institute – Canada (NSI) a national training school widely known for its prestigious training programs for Canadian writers, directors and producers working in film and television.
Fighting the Demon is about a rehabilitated Artist confronting his suicidal tendencies and drug additions with his brush and canvas. He reflects on the time drugs pushed him to the edge. He gazed in the abyss, but was unable to jump. His past illusions continue to haunt his every moment, but can he possibly paint his demons away? They say the pen is mightier than the sword, but can the brush fight off the never-ending waves of memory?
The NSI Online Short Film Festival is the only year-round, 100% Canadian online film festival. New films are added to the NSI website weekly and over 140 Canadian short films are available to watch in the growing archive of short film. All NSI website content can be accessed for free. In August, you can watch the film on the NSI Website.
All films selected to play in the festival are automatically considered for the A&E Short Filmmakers Award which recognizes excellence in filmmaking and awards $2,500 to the winner.

T24 Contest
The Toronto Youth Shorts Film Festival is a volunteer-run, non-profit organization that works with industry partners to provide opportunities of showcase for local youth filmmakers and video artists.
Facebook: www.facebook.com/torontoyouthshorts
Blog: torontoyouthshorts.wordpress.com
A note from the organizers:
The Toronto Youth Shorts Film Festival is returning for our 3rd year to showcase the work of local emerging filmmakers from the Greater Toronto Area and we have a lot of opportunities for Centennial students to get involved!
First up is the return of the T24 Project, our own 24 hour film challenge. Unlike other similar challenges, we ask filmmakers to create work not based on silly props or oddly written lines of dialogue but rather on a challenge question we provide them on the Toronto experience. For one night, Toronto will become the cinematic playground for youth as they tell their stories about the city. Completed entries will be screened at the 2011 Toronto Youth Shorts Film Festival and are eligible for prizes. The challenge takes place on the evening of April 29 - perfect for students since it's after exams!
Second is our general call for submissions where we are accepting films and new media work made by artists between the ages of 18-28 in the GTA. Whether it is heartwarming dramas, zany comedies, informative documentaries, out-of-this-world experimental work or whimsical animations, we would like to see what the young filmmakers and video artists in the GTA have to offer! Selected films have the opportunity to receive industry feedback, network with their peers at our events and compete for thousands of dollars in prizes!
Attached is the information for both the T24 Project and the general festival submissions. For more information about the festival and the T24 Project, visit our website at www.torontoyouthshorts.ca. I look forward to seeing the work of Centennial students.

Ford Foundation Launches $50 Million Fund for Next-Generation Documentary Filmmakers
NEW YORK, 19 January 2011 — One day before the start of the Sundance
Film Festival, a program of the Sundance Institute, and its gathering
of independent filmmakers from around the world, the Ford Foundation
today announced a five-year, $50 million initiative to help find and
support a new generation of filmmakers whose works address urgent
social issues.
The new initiative, called JustFilms, will invest $10 million a year
over the next five years to support and expand the community of
filmmakers and mediamakers around the world focused on creating
documentaries with passion and purpose, but who often lack funding to
realize their visions or reach audiences.
"With the growth of the Web and social networks, the potential global
audience for filmed content with a social conscience has exploded,"
said Luis UbiƱas, president of the Ford Foundation. "We want JustFilms
to support visionary filmmakers from around the world to create works
on urgent social issues, and help them reach and engage audiences."
JustFilms will build on the foundation's longtime support for
documentaries, including such landmark productions as "Eyes on the
Prize," "State of Fear" and "Why Democracy," among scores of others.
It will also leverage the foundation's global network of 10 regional
offices to identify and lift new talent from around the world and to
strengthen emerging communities of documentary filmmakers.
